The evolution of tea, also
known as Camellia Sinensis as its botanical name, goes way back
to 2737 BC when a Chinese Emperor accidentally discovered it
as a beverage that gave vigor of body, contentment and determination
of purpose.
Today tea has emerged to be one of the most sought after beverages
worldwide. There are more than 1,500 varieties of tea produced
in more than 29 countries with the main producing countries
found in Asia and Africa. Though there are many producers, the
global supply is dominated by a few large producers mainly Sri
Lanka, Kenya and India for black tea and China for green tea.
The major producer countries are India, China, Sri Lanka, Kenya,
Indonesia and Turkey. Smaller producers include Bangladesh,
Taiwan, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Burundi, Cameron, Malawi,
Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zaire, Zimbabwe,
Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Australia and Papua New Guinea. |
